Highest score recorded 86.6 Out of 100. Nobody has reached the top band yet.
The argument

Almost nobody is ready, and that is the opportunity

Each dot is 1,000 websites, 1,000 dots in all. One is lit. At this scale 216 sites is about a fifth of a single dot, so it is drawn whole in order to be visible at all.

We analysed 1,000,000+ websites against 250+ signals each. Exactly 216 scored well enough to be recommended reliably by an AI assistant. That is 0.022% of them.

Not one has reached the top band. The highest score recorded anywhere is 86.6 out of 100, which means the standard every business is now judged against is one that nobody has met.

That gap is the whole argument of this book. The work required to be cited by AI is specific, mostly mechanical, and almost entirely undone by your competitors.

Key takeaways

  • An AI assistant does not return a list of links. It reads a few sources and writes one answer that names two or three businesses, so ranking well and being named are different jobs.
  • Of 1,000,000+ websites analysed, 216 score AI-Ready. That is 0.022% of them, or about 1 in 4,600.
  • Nobody has reached the top band. The highest score recorded anywhere is 86.6 out of 100.
  • The work runs in one order: crawler access and structured data first, then writing that a machine can lift and attribute, then mentions on other people's sites.
  • An assistant answers the same question differently each time, so visibility has to be read as a rate across repeated runs rather than from a single answer.
The short answer

Why does a site that ranks on Google get ignored by ChatGPT?

Because the two systems are answering different questions. Google returns a list of links and lets the reader choose. An assistant reads a handful of sources, decides which ones it trusts, and writes a single answer naming two or three businesses. Being on page one is not the same as being one of the sources it read, and a good Google ranking guarantees nothing about the second. Three things decide it, and all three are mechanical rather than creative: whether each engine's crawler is allowed to fetch the site at all, whether a page states its answer in a self-contained block a machine can lift and attribute, and whether anyone else on the internet says the same thing about the business. In our experience the first of those is where most sites fail, and it is the cheapest of the three to put right.

What is inside

Eight parts, in the order you would do the work

Thirty-six chapters. The three middle parts are the method itself: Foundation, then Extraction, then Reinforcement, in that order, because each one depends on the one before it.

  1. The Shift

What changed, how an AI actually assembles an answer, and why ranking on Google stopped being the same thing as being recommended.

  2. Diagnose

Establish a baseline before you change anything, run the competitor replacement test, and read the result honestly.

  3. Foundation

The mechanical layer. Crawler access for each engine, llms.txt, structured data, entity clarity and a Wikidata entry.

  4. Extraction

Writing so a machine can lift your answer cleanly and attribute it to you. The five blocks, the perfect page, and query fan-out.

  5. Reinforcement

Third parties decide what AI believes about you. How to find yours, earn mentions, and become the source of a number.

  6. Track and repair

Measuring visibility as a rate rather than a single answer, separating noise from drift, and fixing an answer that gets you wrong.

  7. Execute

The seven-day sprint, the thirty-day plan, the priority matrix, and the agentic shift already underway.

  8. The toolkit

Every template, checklist, worksheet and file pack, plus the access code that unlocks the digital version.

See where you stand today

Score your own site against the same 250+ signals used across the whole dataset and get your result back in about a minute. No email needed to run it. SearchScore's paid tracking starts at £49 a month, and every copy of the book includes twelve months of tracking at no extra cost.

Know what to fix first

Not a list of everything wrong with your site, but what to do and in what order, with a step-by-step guide for each item.

Know whether it worked

Twelve months of tracking. Your site is re-checked every week across 6 AI engines (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, DeepSeek, Grok), so you watch your visibility move instead of hoping it did.

Skip the fiddly parts

Annotated robots.txt, llms.txt and JSON-LD blocks written for you, five content templates, a thirty-prompt query bank, four worksheets and two Notion trackers.

Really easy to follow and actually useful

It explains AI search and rankings in simple English and gives you practical things you can do to help your company get found by the main AI search engines and ranked higher recommended more often. The free tools are a great bonus too! Overall, I think this book is a hidden Gem for business owners and I was able to get results surprisingly quickly. Would highly recommend

must-read for anyone wanting to understand AI search

Really enjoyed this book. It's an easy read and does a great job of explaining how AI is changing the way people search for and choose businesses. Some really useful ideas in here, especially if you're involved in marketing or running a business. Definitely made me think differently about where search is heading. Well worth a read.

A really useful guide to ai search

Really useful and easy to read. It gave me a much better understanding of how businesses can get found and recommended by tools like chatgpt and gemini, with plenty of practical ideas rather than just theory. Definitely worth a read.

From the author
I wrote this because I kept giving the same answer. Someone would show me a site that ranked perfectly well and ask why ChatGPT had never heard of them, and it was almost always the same three things in the same order. It felt daft to keep saying it one client at a time. Ronnie Huss
Questions

Before you buy

Who is this book for?

Owners and marketers at businesses that get found through search and have noticed that traffic changing shape. It assumes no technical background. Where a job needs a developer, the book says so and gives you the exact instruction to hand over.

Do I need to buy anything else to use it?

No. The method works with a text editor and your website's admin. Every copy also comes with the digital toolkit and twelve months of tracking at no extra cost, unlocked with the access code printed inside Part 8.

Is this just SEO with a new name?

It overlaps and it is not the same job. Traditional SEO competes for a position in a list of links. This competes to be the source an AI uses when it writes one answer and cites three places. Chapter 2 sets out the mechanism, and Chapter 4 explains why a site can rank well on Google and still never be mentioned by ChatGPT.

How current is it?

It published on . AI search moves faster than print, so the references and any figures that have shifted since are maintained online at searchscore.io/the-book/updates.

Which format should I buy?

The Kindle edition is the cheapest way in and the links inside it are tappable. The paperback and hardcover are the ones people mark up, and both run to 219 pages at 6 by 9 inches. Every edition carries the same access code.

What is GEO?

Generative Engine Optimisation: the work of making a brand more likely to be selected and cited in an AI-generated answer. The term comes from the field's founding academic paper (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024). The glossary defines it alongside the rest of the vocabulary.
